How to Invert the Colors of an Image

Color inversion replaces every red, green, and blue channel with its opposite value. The result resembles a photographic negative and can reveal contrast patterns that are difficult to notice in the original.

What color inversion does

Digital images usually describe each pixel with red, green, and blue values from 0 to 255. Inversion subtracts each value from 255. Pure black becomes white, pure red becomes cyan, and a dark color becomes a lighter complement. This mathematical opposite is not always the same as a traditional artist's color-wheel complement.

How to invert image colors online

Inversion versus grayscale and black and white

Inversion reverses channel values but keeps color relationships. Grayscale removes hue and represents brightness with shades of gray. Inverting a film negative does not automatically correct its orange mask, exposure, dust, fading, or color balance. Professional negative conversion requires additional adjustments.

Do not confuse image inversion with device settings

Phone and operating-system color-inversion settings change how the screen is displayed for accessibility; they do not edit the source image. To create a file that remains inverted when shared, process and export the image itself. If you only need a temporary display change, use the accessibility settings documented for your device.

Check the PNG export

Open the downloaded file and verify color, dimensions, transparency, and text direction. PNG avoids another lossy JPEG pass but can be larger for photographs. Keep the original image and use descriptive filenames so the negative is not mistaken for the source.
