Preparing spreadsheet data for JSON

Clean spreadsheets convert to JSON more reliably. Use a single header row, remove merged cells, avoid blank columns in the middle of the table, and make sure each column name is unique. Dates, currency, percentages, and long identifiers can change format during conversion, so inspect a few rows before using the JSON in an app or automation.

If your workbook has multiple sheets, convert one sheet at a time when the structures are different. For comma-separated data, use CSV to JSON. For the reverse workflow, use JSON to XLSX after checking that the JSON structure is an array of objects.

XLS to JSON examples and checks

A product spreadsheet might use columns such as sku, name, price, category, and stock. After conversion, each row should become one JSON object with those column names as keys. A contacts sheet might use name, email, phone, company, and notes. Empty cells should be checked because they may become blank strings, null values, or missing fields depending on the conversion logic.

Before using converted JSON in a website or app, validate that numbers stayed numbers where needed and that identifiers such as postal codes, invoice numbers, and SKU values did not lose leading zeros. Dates are another common source of mistakes because spreadsheet software stores them differently from plain JSON.

If the output will feed an API, compare it with the API's required field names and nesting. Flat spreadsheet columns are easy to read, but APIs sometimes expect nested objects or arrays that require a second cleanup step.
