When to convert XML to JSON

XML to JSON conversion is useful when moving configuration, feeds, or API examples into JavaScript workflows. Element names usually become object keys, repeated child elements become arrays, and attributes may need a naming convention so they do not conflict with normal child nodes. Review the output before pasting it into production code.

If your XML contains namespaces, comments, processing instructions, or mixed text and elements, the JSON may need manual adjustment. Keep a copy of the original XML and validate the converted structure with a formatter. For tabular exports, use XML to CSV instead.

XML to JSON conversion examples

An XML product feed may contain repeated product elements with child fields such as title, price, image, and availability. In JSON, those repeated elements usually become an array of product objects. Attributes such as currency or language need a consistent naming style so they are not confused with normal child elements.

Configuration XML can be more complex because it may include namespaces, comments, empty elements, and mixed text. After converting, inspect whether single items became objects while repeated items became arrays. This difference matters when code expects the same shape every time.

For data exchange, keep both the original XML and converted JSON until the receiving system accepts the result. If your goal is a spreadsheet, convert XML to CSV only after you know which repeating element should become each row.
