Current YouTube thumbnail dimensions
At this guide's publication date, YouTube Help recommends making a custom video thumbnail as large as possible, with a resolution of 3840 by 2160 pixels, a minimum width of 640 pixels, and a 16:9 aspect ratio. Older articles commonly cite 1280 by 720; that is also 16:9, but it is no longer the resolution stated in the current official recommendation.
YouTube lists JPG, GIF, and PNG as supported image formats. Upload limits differ by device and content type, so verify the current limit in YouTube Help and in the uploader rather than optimizing against an old fixed number.
Resize an image to 16:9
- Start with the highest-quality permitted photo or artwork.
- Crop the composition to 16:9 before resizing so faces and text are not stretched.
- Open the Image Resizer and enter 3840 by 2160, or another suitable 16:9 size when the source cannot support that resolution.
- Export the image and inspect it at full size and as a small preview.
- Use the Image Compressor only if the upload remains larger than the current platform limit.
Enlarging a small source does not create real detail. Use a sharper original instead of repeatedly upscaling an old thumbnail.
Design for a small preview
Use one clear subject, strong separation from the background, and little text. Keep important faces, products, and lettering away from the extreme edges where interface elements or responsive crops may compete with them. Check readability at roughly phone-card size rather than judging only on a large design canvas.

Upload or change the thumbnail in YouTube Studio
For a standard video, open Content in YouTube Studio, select the video, choose an automatic option or upload a permitted custom image, and save the change. Account eligibility and policy requirements apply. Custom thumbnail handling for Shorts differs from long-form videos, so follow the current instructions shown by YouTube for that content type.
Inspect an existing public thumbnail
